The photo is of VA Techs new Center for the Performing Arts. It was a random photo selection based on it being a new building with a lot of glass and working on a LEED certification. I use it as an example of Virginia's state building program. Many governors back, the use of LEED building concepts were required by the governor. I have long believed, we waste a lot of money by paying for the certification while telling ourselves our buildings are more efficient. I have always doubted the meme. Only time and an honest appraisal will tell.

Why did I go for glass? Well, glass is normally a pretty poor wall material for energy conservation when compared to other wall system.  They also often enclose an atrium, which are more expensive to heat and cool.

I watched as a huge array of solar panels were installed on several campuses in Virginia. In talking with those who knew the numbers for one, the payback was set at around 90 years. But that was defined as green or sustainable.

Don't get me wrong, I know sometimes the concepts are workable. Why I even used solar in my horse barn because it was less expensive, all in, than running an underground line from my existing panel or the cost of a new service. On the other hand, I don't run my house on it.

But for government work, in the end, it all ends up in the tax rate.

Here is the link that resulted in this post. It seems that in DC, LEED buildings are energy consumers and not efficient at all. Here is the ...Link to the Daily Caller report
